| The Lemon Tree Studio, 4th, 6th and 9th August 2006. Widely regarded as Benjamin Britten's finest work, The Turn of the Screw was inspired by Henry James' horrifying ghost story. Both the opera and its inspiration confront the ambiguous world of the real, the imagined, the living and the dead. That seeming innocence can be so entirely corrupted by the evil desperation of the next world is painted in colours as vivid as hell itself by the 20th century's most brilliant composer. His sensitive, yet theatrically vivid response to James' prose makes this short opera an experience as disturbing and stark as life's darkest realities.
